Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has been responsible for various outstanding projects which are currently going on in Punjab in an attempt to make the government departments more and more efficient. In this series of efforts, the latest project is focused towards Excise & Taxation Department (Pakistan).

PITB has provided Punjab Excise & Taxation Department with a smartphone application, using which they will be able to fetch details about the ownership of the vehicle. This would mean that they won’t have to ask the owner to provide them with original documents in order to verify the ownership. However, there is no mention if they will be able to check if the tax for the car up to the current year has been paid or not. It would be a nice addition if it is missing, as it would enable the Excise & Taxation Department to take action against the violators.

The department already has website http://www.excise-punjab.gov.pk/ which you can use to get details about any vehicle. We certainly hope that measures like this will improve the efficiency of the department and give positive results.

Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) uploaded a teaser a couple of days ago on their facebook page asking people to share what they think could possibly be in the pipeline. Two days later, they announced their plan to go ahead with Integrated Command, Contract & Communication (IC3) Center. IC3 center is supposed to offer a platform to the security personnel to gather information and collectively act on it, when necessary. This platform comprises of five major components:

1. Dispatch Center
2. Crisis Management Center
3. Emergency Call Center
4. CCTV Control Center
5. Strategic Operations & Monitoring Center

For this purpose, they will be installing CCTV cameras on all traffic signals and public places. The video stream received from these cameras will be auto-analysed with the help of the system to detect and suspicious activities or individuals. Similarly Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) System will be made part of this project. This will enable the authorities to create a database of vehicles using a certain road, which can be used later to for further analysis. ANPR can also be used to identify cars who haven’t paid their tax, enabling Excise & Taxation Department to catch the culprits increasing the revenue for the department.

However, this system is being currently implemented in Lahore, Pakistan only. After the success of this project it may be expanded to other cities.

Since the day I put my Warid LTE sim into my iPhone, it has been asking me to update the carrier settings. I kept on ignoring it. But today, I got tired of it and clicked Update. And then I noticed things had changed for worse. Initially it was just the changing of LTE logo into 4G. I didn’t care much for it. Because it was still giving me an ugly speed of 5MBPS which I was getting before this update. But later my PTCL Internet wasn’t working so I decided to create a Personal Hotspot and thats when I got a real shock. It wouldn’t allow me to create a personal hotspot. Now when I try to create a hotspot it asks me to contact Warid. Probably Warid has blocked it. So all those who haven’t updated their Carrier Settings, please don’t!

For those who have already done that please stay tuned as we are working on a solution and will update the post as soon as we have a solution.

Update: It was an eventful night trying to figure out how to solve this problem. I started off with restoring my phone. But like I said PTCL wasn’t being friendly, it took me around 3 hours to download the update. And since I am a morning person, I slept! Thankfully when I got up I hadn’t managed to crawl on top of my computer breaking the screen. When I looked at my phone, I could see the hello screen. I was happy that phone had finally been restored. I went through the activation steps. Meanwhile iTunes kept on popping notifications asking me to update my carrier settings. I tried to ignore as much as I could, but magically I ended up pressing enter at the wrong time and ughh it happened again. And then started the process of restoring the phone once again. Once it was restored, the first thing I tried was creating a personal hotspot. And guess what it worked. Now by this time my phone had developed several other un-related issues which Apple has failed to resolve for the longest time. While I was trying to resolve those, I thought maybe they are happening because of my crappy PTCL. I went into settings to turn off the wifi and noticed missing Personal Hotspot. I went into cellular, and tried to switch on the Personal Hotspot. Oh no not again! Once again it won’t allow me to create a personal hotspot. This time it won’t say contact warid but kept on saying carrier instead. So that meant while I was asleep I hadn’t definitely ended up installing carrier updates again. I tried airplane mode, searching for carrier manually and changing it to zong and then back again to warid. But to no use. I was already having a lot of issues with Warid given their slow speed and connectivity issues during an International call. I told myself that this is it, I have had it. Tomorrow in the morning I would port to Zong. Enough is enough. And I slept. When I woke up in the morning, guess what? Personal Hotspot was back and working.

Moral of the Story: If your personal hotspot isn’t working, tell yourself with sincerity that you are switching to zong and go to sleep. By the time you wake up your Personal Hotspot will be working again! Because I have no other way to explain how it started working again.

At times it can be hard to figure out how to use Windows default Remote Desktop Application. Especially if you are connecting to another computer over the internet. There can be a lot settings involved which need to be taken care of before you can start a remote session. There are many third-party solutions which you can use if you want to regularly access a particular PC. But what if you want to help a friend? It will be too time consuming to ask him/her to download some third party solution so that you can start screen sharing. And not to forget you need to have the same software so that you can communicate.

Join.me makes life a lot simpler when it comes to screen sharing. The individual who wants to initiate remote session needs to download a small application from their website. Once you are done. Just double click and a console will open with your computer id written on it. Ask the individual with whom you want to share the screen to enter this id on join.me and join the session.

And that is it! No settings, nothing involved. It is as simple as that!

Emails are just like words. Once said it is hard to take them back. But hey what if you get a chance to take back that last email? Yes you can do that using this nifty trick. All you need to do is enable and install this Google lab add-on to your gmail account. This will allow you to undo your last email. You can set the time up to a maximum of 30 seconds.

Web Cric:

Web Cric is another website that can be used if you are running into problems with Cric Info or if they aren’t streaming a particular match. This website however does not provide its own stream, it basically captures feeds from random channels and displays it. another downside is that Web Cric is riddled with pop-ups and ads making the whole experience annoying and less desire able overall.

Cric Time:

Cric Time is identical with Web Cric, providing access to different feeds. If using Web Cric or Cric Time the feed might get stuck or unresponsive so you get an option to switch to the other.

It seems that raiding some servers and knocking them offline are not the only things required in order to keep The Pirate Bay down. Just weeks after Swedish police’s crackdown on the company’s servers the website is up and running once again. And they have even changed their logo this time from a pirate ship to a phoenix. Could it possibly be to taunt at the helplessness of the authorities?

Currently there are no ads placed on the website though the look and the feel of the website is same as before. The website has significant amount of resources and the user accounts are working too, so it seems there isn’t significant data loss.

It seems that the nightmare of copyright holders isn’t over yet and the authorities will have to do more in order to take down one of the best-know pirate havens.

Apple recently released 8.1.3 for its iOS devices aimed to address a couple of issues. The update though not a very huge one does bring some solace to users with limited storage space who have been unable to update to the most recent iOS iterations due to its sheer size. Although the reduction in update size it not confirmed but anything less than the whooping 5.7Gb free space requirement is welcomed.

The update itself is 247Mb coming from iOS 8.1.2. The list of fixes offered by 8.1.3 includes:

• Reduced free storage requirement for update as mentioned above
• Fix for users unable to enter credentials for activation of Messages and FaceTime
• This also helps address Spotlight search to display app results properly
• Multitasking gestures now work on iPad
• New configuration settings for education standardized testing

However, Apple’s support community has been ablaze with the GMT bug which causes iOS calendar to be erroneously synced across devices. Sadly this update does not address the GMT bug wrecking havoc within the corporate world.

Secondly, older iOS devices did not get any love as they are still troubled by the intermittent WiFi connectivity issues making it irksome for users to jump the iOS 8 band wagon.

These issues have surely marred iOS 8’s adaption within the Apple eco-system as it has been much slower compared to iOS 7’s adaption.

Hopefully Apple would be releasing patches to resolve these issues in the near future now that they also have Google’s Project Zero on their tails. One more group to worry about.

Half Brick studios return with a brand new episode of Barry’s adventures. After their classic hit Jet Pack Joyride; that had you hooked for hours and hours,  Half Brick has released Monster Dash, another endless run game set on building rooftops, snowcapped peaks or scary zombie infected cities.

The concept is simple, you choose your weapon and head out into the wild zapping or gunning down monsters, collecting coins and avoiding the occasional pitfall. Monster Dash however picks up speed real fast and in no time you are itching to blink but the risk of falling off keep you at bay. What is interesting and different is the changing scenery which seamlessly maintains the endless run flavor. After you successfully run for a while on any scene a ray of light would teleport you in another world and you would continue with your action packed adventure. I feel this relieves the player of environment monotony which can become really cumbersome during long runs.

Developers have even gone the extra mile to also create different monsters for each scene so basically if you are in winter wonderland you would get Yeti’s rather than mummies that you would find in the creepy night scene. Each enemy offers a different set of interaction, so for example jumping on a putrid zombie or fire daemon would damage your health while jumping on a Yeti with antlers would allow you to jump higher.

Monster Dash comes with its own selection of cool weapons which can be unlocked using the coins collected during runs. The options include: Shotgun, The Pacifier, Mr Zappy, Rocket Launcher and SMG which have different impacts, speed and reloading times. If a user wants to speed up progress they can of course use real money to purchase gems that can be redeemed for coins.

In fact what I really like about this game is that you can fully enjoy the title without using any real money so in other words, there are no features that you cannot enjoy or unlock without real money. Monster Dash also follows the energy model to limit the number of runs but this is not an issue since you get 14 energy points and they reload pretty quickly making your play seamless and the wait less painful.

Like Jetpack Joyride you can pickup power ups that appear through the run. Monster Dash is limited to Jetpack and Hog which allow you to power through your run helping to reach longer run distances and horde more coins by running over enemies.

Alongside weapon unlocks you get to upgrade Barry using coins collected. Each level up provides more abilities to Barry such as carrying 4 lives instead of 3. Increasing jetpack ammo or fuel for the Hog. Maximum level upgradeable is level 20 which maxes out all of Barry’s abilities. Another mode to help you progress faster are time sensitive challenges that award medals and redeemable gems based on your performance, when challenge time runs out. There are 10 challenges which cycle over and over. The total list in random order is as follows:

• Lost Vampires
• Dare Devil
• Big Game Hunter
• Mind The Gap
• Apocalypse
• Death From Above
• Stink Tank
• Winter is Coming
• One Shot Wonder
• Zombie Barry

As a downside, the game is not that challenging and a player can accomplish all goals fairly quickly as compared to other alternatives. It is by no means a disappointing title but somehow does not exceed the benchmark set by its elder brother: Jet Pack Joyride. A couple of days into Monster Dash, it loses interest fairly quickly but still good fun for a quick distraction.

Sound, graphics and gameplay meet the usual Half Brick perfection standards and controls are intuitive and easy to pick up.

Skype, one of the pioneers in video calling, has recently launched a video messaging application named Skype Qik which is quite similar to Snapchat.  Snapchat was giving some competition in the area of quick back-and-forth video chats because of its simple interface. With the new quick video delivery app, Skype Qik, the Skype is stepping out of its comfort zone and trying to show that it won’t let competitors get away that easy. The mobile-app is focused on sending short clips. But unlike Snapchat, you can only send these clips to people on your contact list. You can’t enter a phone number or anything in the app. The user has to be in your contact list in order for you to be able to engage in video messaging with that person. Similarly, when you setup the application you aren’t required to enter your Skype details or create an account with Skype Qik. It just asks you to enter your phone number. All messages vanish after two weeks to help protect your privacy, and you can pre-record certain messages which you want to share as a standard reply.

The application is available on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. And it is free to use. So if you want to do some quick video messaging, try out Skype Qik.

A few months ago Google released a nifty little game for its Chrome browser which was made available in offline mode. Not necessarily good news if you are facing connectivity issues in the first place, but still  a good way to channel your frustration or energy! Depending on the nature and duration of your outage you can indulge yourself to make the wait less painful. I’m sure this will be a welcome addition by users trying to connect to choppy airport internet hotspots or facing power outages.

So the question is, how do I access the game? I am sure you are familiar with the offline/unable to connect to the internet page below:

One way is to simply turn your WiFi off and search for something on Chrome or use developer tools to simulate a similar environment. So once you land on this page just hit space bar and watch T-rex spring to life! and behold your adventure has begun.

The game has a very retro feel to it, even has those old school sound effects. However, if you are looking something more recent you can try a couple of titles available from Google Chrome Launcher also available for offline play.

How many time have you found yourself frantically looking for WiFi access be it your favorite coffee shop or some hotel you are staying in while on the move? More often than not users find themselves battling connectivity issues such as weak signal strength or overcrowded public networks. Comcast users however might be in luck! As a Comcast subscriber you get free access to Xfinity hotspots across the US allowing you to connect to the internet via your Comcast credentials.

To help plan trips better Comcast has also released the Xfinity Wifi App on iOS and Android allowing users to locate all available WiFi hotspots in your vicinity. The app even allows you to download and install Offline Datasets by region so that you are prepared for the worst.

One uber cool feature bundled with the app is augmented reality which overlays hotspots directly above your camera feed. Here is a screenshot below:

Once you are within range of an Xfinity hotspot you should be able to join the network.

ZenMate, the famous VPN browser extension has launched its own mobile application. Their newly launched app will not only work as a proxy allowing you to view websites which have been blocked by you respective country but also hide your IP to keep your identity secret saving you from the dark world out there.

Just like the browser you have option to select preferable location and it will connect you through the VPN of that country. You can use same login details as used on the browser and it will install a profile on your phone before it starts working. The mobile application also allows you to block harmful website and compress the data received. You can enable these in the settings. You can also enable Always On option. So even if you toggle VPN to off in the settings, the Zenmate will connect again enabling the VPN automatically.

Don’t Touch The Spikes a game developed by Ketchapp is spin-off of games like Jetman and Flappy Bird. But usually the developers just change the layout and keep the concept of the game same. But developers at Ketchapp have done a redo of the whole concept. Instead of just changing the layout they have changed the gameplay. And I love it!

The graphics of the game are superb! I love the bird character with bright colors. The goal in the game is to prevent your bird from touching the spikes. Once you hit a spike, your bird will die and resultantly your game will be over. There are a number of different game modes available:

1. General – This is the basic default game play. Once the app is loaded just click in the middle of the screen and your game starts.
2. Multiplayer – You can play a split-screen multiplayer with your friends and family
3. Duel – Compete with the computer. You need to win three rounds to compete with the next bird.
   
4. Cave – It is pitch dark and you have a torch-helmet which guides you as to where the spikes are. But it is usually last second warning. While staying away from the spikes you have to collect as many green crystals as you can.
   
5. Park – You can create a park by building trees. More trees more birds. Click on birds to win diamonds. You can use these diamonds to get exclusive birds and to upgrade your park

Ketchapp has a long list of infinte run games, and Circle is on the list of those awesome games. Developers at Ketchapp have turned a science class project involving wire, bulb and battery into a wonderful game. This is what I love about Ketchapp, all their games are very well thought. The concepts aren’t out of the world but wonderful adaptation of things around us.

The aim in the game is to collect diamonds and avoid hitting the line with your circle, which you control by tapping on the screen. You can unlock new circle designs by completing challenges, or buying them with your collected diamonds. You can also play the race mode, in which you have to complete certain number of laps in order to win and proceed.

Even though Circle isn’t unique, its simplicity and graphics make me want to play it again and again.

Google Talk app for windows has been one of my favorite messenger app of all times. Even after Google replaced it with Hangouts I continued to use it. It is so simple and easy to use. And well maybe I don’t like change. Today when I logged in, I was greeted by a message I wish I had never seen. It was a goodbye message from my favorite app. Google has decided to discontinue the app from 25th February 2015 and all the users like me will be forced to start using Google Hangout App.

Get ready to be addicted to one of the simplest yet most challenging games you will experience. Stick Hero by Ketchapp can really make you raged/frustrated especially when you are so close. And this challenge factor is the reason why I think this game is highly addictive.

You can play this game with one finger. Just tap on the screen while your stick hero stands at the edge of the cliff. Tapping on the screen will raise bar/stick which will then connect the two cliffs. You are required to estimate the gap between the two cliffs, and raise the stick accordingly. If it is too short or too long you will fall off the cliff. There are fruits which you can pick by tapping on the screen while your character is travelling on the stick. Tapping at this instance will enable your character to walk underneath the stick. Make sure you tap again before you reach the cliff, else your character will hit the cliff and fall down. You get extra point if you manage to place the stick exactly on the red dot on top of each cliff.
